Annoyed with HP

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I needed to download the HP Insight Diagnostic CD.

Being on a MacBook Pro, I got kinda annoyed with them.

The download page for the workstation clearly states: HP Insight Diagnostics Offline Edition (ISO File Only)

In fact, it’s a link you can click for more information.  There, it states supported operating systems.  It includes Red Hat Linux along with Windows.  It’s only on this page that they give you the filename: sp42052.exe.

Turns out this file extracts the ISO (along with two text files).

So you pretty much need Windows to get this diagnostic CD.  Just kinda annoyed me.  The information on the pages is wrong and misleading and I don’t even know why they need to put it in a self-extracting executable.  I tried just zipping the ISO on my Mac and it came back as a smaller file size than what I had to download.

Hewlett-Packard,  please just zip the file so I can extract the ISO on any platform.

UPDATE:   At the bottom of the HP website linked above, you can send a comment to them.  I let them know what I had written here and when I clicked submit, I got the below error.  Happened when I tried to resend it.
