Securely Erasing Hard Drive in Mac OS X

A lot of people are very sensitive about their data. For a recent client, I put together some quick instructions for performing a “Secure Erase” on a hard drive using Disk Utility.

A secure erase is a low level format. The Department of Defense suggests performing a low level format seven times to ensure the data is irretrievable. On a Macintosh computer with Disk Utility, not only do you have the option to automatically perform a low level format seven times, but you also have the option to perform it thirty-five times.
