Securely Erasing Hard Drive in Mac OS X

Friday, February 27th, 2009

A lot of people are very sensitive about their data.  For a recent client, I put together some quick instructions for performing a “Secure Erase” on a hard drive using Disk Utility.

A secure erase is a low level format.  The Department of Defense suggests performing a low level format seven times to ensure the data is irretrievable.  On a Macintosh computer with Disk Utility, not only do you have the option to automatically perform a low level format seven times, but you also have the option to perform it thirty-five times.
